On October 5th, McCanny host our 4th Art Seminar for students who are interested in applying for the art programs at their future universities. The seminar is dedicated for giving students and their parents a guide and a counsel to answer to their doubts and lack of previous knowledge of the art and design field.

This year we have invited five guests and alumni from OCAD, Ryerson, and Queen’s Universities to introduce the three different stream and field in visual arts, which are the Fine Arts; Media; Design. Our guest speakers introduced the variety of programs that are available out there from Drawing& Painting, Graphic design, Industrial Design to Film Production, New Media. The next important thing is definitely the portfolio evaluation for most of the art related programs. Katerina graduated from Fine Art program at OCAD who is working at McCanny showed her portfolio when she was applying OCAD couple years back, so the students have a better idea of how to build their own.

Mariana who is from Ryerson’s Film Production Program shared with us her experience studying at Ryerson and talked about getting her first internship and the importance of social networking while in school. According to Mariana, even though a lot of schools offer internships opportunities, you still need to build connections and that is the reason why she got her thesis stop -motion featured in couple Toronto film festivals.

In order for students to understand and foresee their future in the visual art field,  we also invited Stein who founded the Hi Thank Bye Design studio in Toronto. Stein showed the audience the real process as a designer when working with a real client. Meanwhile, he offered a lot of personal experience and advice for students and parents who have concerns not ended with a job after graduation.

The Art Seminar is a tradition at McCanny Secondary School, and we wish to offer the community enough background knowledge to expand their understanding of the creative industries.
