There are many ways you can challenge yourself beyond the provincial curriculum…

We have collected challenges and competitions from different disciplines and areas of studies for students who are interested in further studies in the subjects and topics they are excited about, and for students to develop leadership skills, public speaking skills, and entrepreneurial skills. These include further exploration in the field of Science, Business, Mathematics, Engineering, and Arts.

Math & Computing

  • Canadian Math Kangaroo Contest:
    Math Kangaroo Canada is a nationally ranked multiple-choice contest that aims to challenge participants and show them just how fun math can be!

  • Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC)
    The Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge (COMC) is Canada’s premier national mathematics competition that is open to any student with an interest in and grasp of high school math. It is the first of a series of tests held by the Canadian Mathematical Society to determine the Canadian IMO team.

  • American Mathematics Competitions (AMC)
    The American Mathematics Competitions are a series of examinations and curriculum materials that build problem-solving skills and mathematical knowledge in middle and high school students.

      Length of the contest: 25-question, 40-minute, multiple choice examination

    • American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME):
      AMC’s invitational competition for high scoring AMC 10/12 participants

      AMC’s top invitational competition for high scoring AIME participants

  • The Centre for Education and Mathematics in Computing (CEMC)
    CEMC has a long history at the University of Waterloo of introducing a love of mathematics and computer science to students around the world.

    • Beaver Computing Challenge (BCC):
      Length of the contest: 45 minutes

      Length of the contest: 2 hours

  • Asian Pacific Mathematics Olympiad
    Canada is a participating country in the Asian Pacific Mathematics Olympiad (APMO). Each year the CMS invites 20-30 students to write the APMO based on their results in other national and international competitions.

  • Canadian Association of Physicists (CAP) High School Exam
    The CAP High School Exam is based upon an internationally recognized syllabus, the I.B. Physics Higher Core Curriculum. Only sections of the syllabus covering mechanics, Optics and Electricity and Magnetism are examined by the CAP Exam.

  • Sir Isaac Newton Exam (SIN)
    The Sir Isaac Newton (SIN) exam is a test of high school physics and is offered by the Department of Physics & Astronomy at the University of Waterloo to encourage the teaching of physics. As in the past, the material will cover basic physics, mainly from the suggested Ontario Secondary School Physics Curriculum.

  • OATP Grade 11 Physics Contest
    The OAPT Grade 11 Physics Contest is for students currently attending school in Ontario, taking SPH3U. It is sponsored by the University of Toronto – Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering.

  • The International Physics Tournament
    The International Physics Tournament is an annual competition between high-school teams.
    The tournament aims to encourage a basic understanding of scientific principles in general and

  • Canadian Young Physicists’ Tournament (CaYPT)
    The Canadian Young Physicists’ Tournament (CaYPT) is a competition among teams of secondary school students in their ability to solve complicated scientific problems, to present solutions to these problems in a convincing form and to defend them in scientific discussions, called Physics Matches (PM). The CaYPT awards outstanding teams and selects outstanding students to represent Canada in the International Young Physicists’ Tournament (IYPT).

Chemistry & Biology

  • U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO)
    The U.S. National Chemistry Olympiad (USNCO) program is a chemistry competition for high school students. The purpose of the competition is to stimulate young people to achieve excellence in chemistry. Eligible students must be U.S. Citizens, enrolled in an American school* for at least one year, and under the age of 20.

  • Canadian Chemistry Contest (CCC)
    The Canadian Chemistry Contest (CCC) is carried out in conjunction with the Canadian Chemistry Olympiad (CCO).

  • Canadian Biology Olympiad (CBO)
    The Canadian Biology Olympiad (CBO) is a nation-wide organization involved in the selection of four secondary school students talented in the field of biological sciences to represent Canada at the International Biology Olympiad. Students are selected on the basis of a two-round competition process (see below).  Round one is the submission of a Skills Portfolio to test your lab skills. The second round is the University of Toronto National Biology Competition to test your theoretical skills.

  • Canadian National Brain Bee competition
    The Brain Bee is a competition for high school students, grades 9 through 12. Students are tested on the knowledge about the brain and neuroscience research. It is designed to stimulate interest and excitement about brain research.

  • S. -T. Yau High School Science Award (YHSSA)
    Ten years ago, the. S.-T. Yau High School Science Award only recognized student achievement in the field of mathematics. Over the years, a physics award, chemistry award, biology award, computer science award and economic and financial modeling award have been already established to make up of a complete scientific award system.

    Avogadro Exam

    The Avogadro Exam is designed for Grade 11 high school students in their first high school chemistry course. Topics include: structure of matter, bonding, reactions, solutions, and gases. The test includes a few probing and demanding questions on some of the main topics of high school chemistry.

  • Canadian Economics Olympiad
    The annual competition in economics organized for high school students. Intended to stimulate the activities of students interested in economics, business, and finance by way of creative problem-solving. The top 5 scorers on the Canadian Economics Olympiad will represent Team Canada at the International Economics Olympiad.
